Ta-Dah!

Thanks to that bobbin full of cream thread, I made it to the end.  I'm pleased it's done but the edging is NOT perfect.  ("Perfect" is a big word anyway… is anything ever perfect?  But that's for another discussion).   Because I changed the shape of the doily, the last round didn't work out symmetrically.  There should have been three sets of trefoils on the angles to give it more of an octagonal shape but because the stitch count wasn't as per the pattern, I couldn't find a way to make it fit without lots of re-designing of the last round so I just went straight all around the edge letting the elements fall into place where they did.

I debated whether to take it apart, add a few more motifs to make the stitch count work… but I feared if I did that, I might not get to the end again!  So I decided to live with this piece as it is.  It's still nice and I don't think many people will spend a lot of time examining whether that last round is symmetrical.  I hope not anyway!

Here are two places on the edge where the design happened to fall right.

What shall I tackle next??

Best wishes,
Frivole

  3. Stunning beautiful piece of tatting, I think it's perfect, if you have any mistakes well that's makes it unique to you, on one else will have made the same mistakes, if there are any.

  4. I see what you mean on that last round. Its too bad but it a spectacular doily non the less. Your lovely stitches make even the flaws look so very good. So what is next, buttercups?

  5. Oh, I think it looks amazing! I don't think any but the most critical would notice the asymmetry and frankly I find it completely visually appealing.

  6. If you hadn't mentioned the shape I wouldn't have noticed anything as it looks lovely as it is. Very easy to be over critical about tatting stitch count etc., but certainly not worth beating yourself up about, honestly it is a work of art.

  8. I've chosen not to look closely, so it looks beautiful to me! Symmetrical or asymmetrical... beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

  9. I agree with the earlier comments -- the 'asymmetry' is not noticeable ! The doily still maintains it's octagonal shape, with some curvature (ooh, don't we all love curves in the right places ;-P) .
Beautiful piece of handwork as usual !!!

  10. Such a beautiful piece, and very impressive. I wouldn't have noticed the points not falling on the angles of the octagon if you hadn't pointed it out.

  14. I'm so glad you found that bobbin! I would have looked for a very long time before noticing the misalignment. The design flows so naturally that a little thing like that barely registers.

  15. Wow!!! That looks fantastic :). That is great that you found a full shuttle which allowed you to finish it instead of waiting for more thread to arrive :).

  16. It is beautiful to me.
As to what to tackle next, how about something easer like world peace?

  17. The 'lack of symmetry' is not obvious at all, and I doubt even judges would notice it. It's a very stunning and eye-appealing design. Amazing how you found the bobbin with the thread on it!

  18. Il est absolument superbe ! Le problème de symétrie ne se voit pas du tout. Une pièce d'exposition, bravo !
