Specially for Debbie

I have been exchanging messages with Debbie at In Tatters and as I'd mentioned Jennifer Williams in my previous post, she asked if I might have a go at her Small SCMR Mat as she was finding the centre part a little problematic.  I had it printed so I thought why not make it next.  Here it is:

Tatted in Lizbeth "Charcoal", size 20

What's unusual about this motif is that she uses self-closing mock rings (SCMRs) in the centre.  I did wonder why as it would be easy to use two shuttles, reverse work and make a normal ring.  The advantage is that you can work this motif with just one shuttle and ball thread.  And really a SCMR is not difficult to make at all and it made me think that I might make more use of them in the future.  But now I'm curious and will have to make the centre part again using two shuttles instead to see how it affects the look.  Will be back soon to show you the second version.

Best wishes,

  1. That is very nice, and you did it so quick. It will be interesting to see the difference.

  2. If I were trying to interpret the pattern from the picture, I wouldn't even think of a SCMR for the center. I would have automatically loaded two shuttles. I do like the color you've used, and I look forward to seeing the difference in the two centers.

  3. Two shuttles would have been my first instinct as well for something like this. But on second glance, I realize that that would give the chains a different shape. The use of SCMR's breaks up the chain so you get a slight point at the base of the SCMR. If you used two shuttles, the core thread of the chain would be continuous before and after the ring, so you would have a continuous curve from one clover to the next.

    1. I think that's a good explanation Miranda, thank you! I do like the shape below the clovers very much but I wondered if it could still be achieved by rw so that the chains faced the same as with the SCMRs...

    2. I think somewhere you'd have to do a shoelace trick if you wanted to maintain the same shape.

    3. Sorry, that is what I meant, an SLT rather than a rw but I've tried it already and I couldn't get the shape. Even with the SLT, you get the continuous curve going on the chain.

  5. This is a really pretty mat. I'm too curious if you can work out the centre rings with 2 shuttles rather than a SCMR.
