Whilst working some more on the snowflake from the previous post, another idea popped into my mind... I think it's worked out kinda neat.
And this is the first snowflake that I remade, testing whether I'm happy with the point. I still like the overall shape of the snowflake but not completely happy with its construction. So the point... I thought I was being clever by making a ONE STITCH SCMR. That's how I got the point. I think it does give a better pointy shape than making an SLT or a lock stitch. I've tried all three options and I think that, with a bit of refinement, the one-stitch-SCMR works well. I'll try to get comparative photos in a future post.
I worked this one in a size 10 too-fluffy thread which I don't really like.
I've also not abandoned the hanky edging.
I work on it here and there, in between other stuff,
and have now turned the second corner.
On the other hand, I just don't know where I put the butterfly doily! It has temporarily disappeared. It never ceases to amaze me how things can just vanish in this house. Hopefully it will re-surface soon and I might find time to do some work on it during the Christmas holiday.
Best wishes,
your snowflakes looks great!!!! i have also been trying to come up with one that resembles an actual snowflake...you doing really good!
ReplyDeleteWill you be showing yours on your blog Shannon?
DeleteThe hanky edging is stunning and really makes me want to buy Jess!'s threads.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the snowflakes are as irresistibly real as all your other snowflake designs. Are you planning on putting these two up for sale this year? I would definitely buy their patterns!
Hi Tatterjil, thank you! I would definitely recommend Jess's threads - particularly her "messy" ones, I really like those.
DeleteI'm glad you like the snowflakes, I'm trying hard to get some patterns written up but I still keep changing my mind on the design!

ReplyDeleteForgot to mention, the one-stitch SCMR is a fascinating idea. Now I want to doodle to try it out.
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely capturing the essence of real snowflakes! And your edging is coming along beautifully!
ReplyDeleteThis week I lost - and fortunately found - many tatting-related things (resulting in spending a lot of time looking for them), including my prized Made in England Aero shuttle, whose hook attached itself to my bed comforter. Fortunately I found it before I threw the comforter in the washing machine!
A one-stitch SCMR, now that is just brilliant! I'm definitely going to use that someday.
ReplyDeleteI like the long picots you've added. I thought the original design looked great, but these picots really just make it perfect. Did you just block them with water to make them pointy, or did you stiffen them a little bit?
Hi Miranda, yes they did need blocking a bit to give them that pointy shape - I pinned them and just went over the snowflake with a steamy iron (not pressing, just lightly over). But it actually looked pretty before I pressed them into shape so I will make another to show it to you in its "natural" state.
DeleteYour snowflakes look wonderful!! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, will these patterns available in your shop soon? I'd love to try some for Christmas gifts!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them Michelle - wasn't sure what I was going to do with them yet... but if people would like them...
Deletevery nice. You have captured the angular look of real snowflakes.
ReplyDeleteYour snowflake looks lovely and the way you got the point very ingenuous. I think you are getting there with the pattern and it looks like a real snowflake.
ReplyDeleteWell done
Margaret
Your snowflake looks so dainty. I too hope the pattern will soon be available in your shop.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing.
Anne
Very neat!
The snowflake is fantastic. I am looking forward to buying the pattern!
ReplyDeleteLove the fact that you started with a "real" snowflake and tried to make the tatting work for you....hopefully you will get this in the shop soon so I can make some for my tree. I have more of your snowflake patterns on my tree than any other designer...yours always seem to appeal to the "Geometry teacher" in me.
ReplyDeleteSo many nice comments!
DeleteThank you Louine, it's a nice thought to picture my designs on your tree! I'll keep working at them and try to decide on a pattern! Every time I try another sample, I come up with a different idea to try!
