These are just samples, quickly tatted, with mistakes in them, knots, etc. I was playing with lock chains at the time and the pattern that I eventually came up with was Minuet... or maybe that was after Minuet, I can't remember for certain.
There was an interesting problem that came up with this design: I wanted a split ring to climb from one round to the next but I had two different colours (it's the green rings near the centre) but of course, I wanted the split ring to be all green, not one half green and one half pink! So I came up with the idea of tatting the second half with two shuttles which worked great - as you can see in the motif above, all the rings are green though one of them is a split ring and one shuttle has pink in it and the other green.
Now I fear I didn't take any notes on this (or on the design itself) so I think I will sit and give this some thought and try to work out how I did it before!
I will be reporting back.
Best wishes,
Frivole
Is this what you did? http://www.janeeborall.freeservers.com/SSSRDoubleCore.pdf
ReplyDeleteI use it a lot and it works really well. Hope it helps.
That must be it Jane! But I remember feeling pleased with myself at the time as I figured it out by myself. There I was thinking I was clever and you had that worked out long ago! But you can only do this if the ring is not attached, am I not right? In this pattern, it works because the ring is free to wrap the loop at the base.
DeleteYes, that is right but there are ways round even that problem probably. I haven't time at the moment to look at it (grandkid sitting) but try taking a look at this - it MIGHT work with the hidden second shuttle too http://www.janeeborall.freeservers.com/SSSRjoin2way.pdf
DeleteThank you for that Jane. I had actually tried that method before or even used a spare bit of thread to anchor the loop so it's do-able.
DeleteThose are so sweet looking!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting from a tecnique point of view! And the design in my opinion surely deserves to be put on paper, so nice!
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with comments so far. I like the idea of adding a second shuttle when trying to move up, I've only been careful to make sure I use a variegated thread with a matching second color so your eyes don't notice it's not the variegated one. If that makes any since. You did great coming up with it on your own.
ReplyDeleteHi Madtatter,
DeleteThis solution does mean you can use any two colour threads as you won't see the other at all in this special split ring. A clever trick really.
A lovely and intricate design as always! I look forward to seeing the pattern.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that you can only use the SSSR technique when there are no joins in the ring. If there are joins, a Dora Young knot would work. However, these are even more fiddly than the double-core SSSR, and on the second half you would have to make a lock join with the second shuttle instead of a regular join, so it would look odd. For these reasons, if there were joins in the ring, I would probably opt to cut and tie rather than try to climb to the next round. Luckily not an issue in this design!
Certainly worth revisitng.
ReplyDeleteLovely little pattern, well worth having another look at them.

Dear frivole , these are the kind of things, that , when you show them to me in person, I understand immediately. Written down, however, they don't make any sense. It could be some sort of word blindness, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations anyway, for such an intricate,as well as lovely design.
PS Would you organise a class for your fans? I would not mind crossing the channel to learn some of your 'tricks'.
I love the motif you made, but I'm not sure it's something I'd ever have the brain power to tackle. I'm sure I could catch on through watching one of your wonderful videos, but like Tally Tatty, I think I suffer from word blindness!
