Queen of Hearts

There has been some discussion about this design over at In Tatters since the publication of Jan Stawasz's second book because this heart (only ever so slightly modified) appears in it.  I don't want to start a debate here too but it inspired me to tat it.

I had never tatted it, though it is a well known and loved heart.  So I thought it was time I did.  Here is the original, Mary Konior's Queen of Hearts.

And in a pretty pale pink...
you don't often see pink on my blog, do you!

Tatted in DMC Babylo "Light Dusky Pink" (224)
from Mary Konior's "Tatting with Visual Patterns"

I like it.  Another great design by MK.  It's only the same elements repeated 9 times but all the shaping is done by where the elements are joined...  clever.  But it also means you have to pay attention!  Easy to get one of those joining picots wrong.

Best wishes,
Frivole

  1. Hello, Frivole. I was inspired by your version of Anne Orr's pomegranate edging, and wondered if I could use your corner, and also your extra picots, if I reference back to you? I have found your tatting fascinating and inspiring, but I never know how sensitive anyone is about people using their stuff. I feel "when in doubt, ask" is probably the best way... :)

    1. Hello Snowy, of course you can, with pleasure. If you want to write to me using the "Email Frivole" link in the right sidebar, I have the corner written out and I can send it to you if you'd like to have it. My version of the edging is also a tiny bit modified from the original so you can have that too if you like.

  2. MK's heart is one of my favorites, and it does look lovely in dusky pink! You are so right about watching the pattern carefully, but paying attention is well worth the effort.

    1. Yes I'm thinking of a way to write it down so I can refer to it more quickly than in the book. Her diagram is good but I think it could be improved a bit for clarity of the joins.

  3. MK's. patterns are always beautiful and she had the nack of making her patterns work into such beautiful designs. I hope the angels are learning a lot while she tats up there.
It's going to be a while before I can get his new book and I saw the post on intatters yesterday, it's naughty to say they are my designs and then use hers as a base, he should at least have put it more prominent that it was based on her design.
Your heart is beautiful in the pale pink.

  4. Thanks for posting this... I have something to say, but I think I shall expand upon it on tat-ology...

Love the MK Heart. Very pretty.

  5. Beautiful heart and lovely color! One of my favorites designs too and fun to make in two colors as well.

  6. A classic, indeed! Looks wonderful here in pink, with your perfect tatting!

Mary's 'Visual Patterns' book made a huge impact on me back in the early '90s, as it was one of the first, if not THE first, major publication where color was used in the diagrams, which I thought was great! I'm amazed Mary was able to get that accomplished with the publisher! However, I agree that it is not clear in the drawing where to join the picots, and I'm not sure I did it correctly on my (so far) only try at the pattern. I agree that the pattern/drawing does need some clarification.
