Google+

I don't like to use my blog to complain.  It's not for that.  It's for sharing the joy of creativity.  BUT, I feel I have to make a comment here about Google+.  Since Google has taken over Youtube, it is trying to force people into Google+.  At first, I went along because I felt I had no choice but I do not wish to be part of their social network.  I just want to be able to blog and to post Youtube videos and answer comments.

Last night I deleted my Google+ profile.  I find out this morning that I am no longer able to comment or reply to comments on my own videos.  To be able to do this, I have to create a Google+ account, the very one I just got rid of.  I don't like to be forced into things against my wish.

For the moment therefore, I will remain unable to reply to comments on my Youtube videos.  Unfortunately, this will appear rude to people who don't follow my blog and thus won't know of my decision (I have over 2,000 followers on Youtube as opposed to the 400+ I have here).  This means that many people will be frustrated by me ignoring their comments.  I feel I have no choice.  I will add a notice at the top of each of my videos so that people know I am no longer able to comment.  Hopefully the notice will be seen and people will understand.

I know a vast majority of people are happy with social medias but it's not "my thing" and I don't think Google+ should keep trying to force me into being part of it and using it.

So there.  I've said it.

Best wishes,
Frivole

  1. I completely agree with you - I have been ignoring all requests to join the Google thing. There will probably be another way for people to contact you if they want to. Someone here will know. And I always enjoy your blog.

  3. I have a Google+ account, but I don't really use it. I find it confusing. However I've been too lazy to look up the way to delete it! I don't like to be forced in to things either. Hopefully their policy will change so that you can reply to comments on your videos.

    1. Yes, they keep trying to link everything to do with you and my Google stuff was showing up on my husband's phone and I was just getting more and more unhappy with it.

  5. I hear you! I am so against the policies of the few Internet giants and for the longest time did not belong to Google+. Then I had to make the decision to switch over when I was trying to sort out my blog address- I was frantic and could not get tat-ology working...

It is inevitable that we must accept some of the protocols to use aspects we need. Real life unfortunately. And very aggravating. I do not know a way around it, nor do those worried about privacy issues online, who work diligently, trying to make things better. So far, the big guns are winning....

    1. Yes, I agree with accepting certain protocols but that's not what Google+ is about. They want to force you into using their own social networking media instead of giving you a choice to use it. I thought the same as people are saying here, I'll just create the profile and not use it. But that's not what happens; unbeknownst to me, they kept creating links and my Google profile became linked with my email and then last night I found I had a new "nickname" which appeared out of nowhere and was now attached to my googlemail address! That's when I decided enough was enough and I pulled the plug!

    2. Perhaps I did not notice this as I use the same name for both emails I use. However you look at it the corporations have taken over...

  6. totally agree with you: Google+ forces you into things that might be not that interesting for yourself. I've got a Google account, just for comments and all the rest ... stays empty and without follow up. At the end, I don't want to be obliged passing hours and hours in front of my computer ;-)

    1. Not interesting wouldn't be so bad, it's the "not wanted at all" that I object to! You may find your Google account doesn't stay empty… I would keep an eye on it.

  7. I agree with you. I felt 'forced' to join Google+, but I don't use it, and I don't follow up on e-mails I get from it - because the account linked to it isn't an account I remember creating, and I don't even know how to ACCESS the Google+ account. Then again, on most people's blogs, you can't comment as 'anonymous' anymore, so you have to join SOMETHING just to give people feedback on what they've said. ....sigh....

  8. Well done for speaking out, I joined google plus but I don't use it, I get fed up with emails telling me of people who I don't know want to be my friends, if I could delete it I would, I get annoyed with being treated and told what we have to do. My blog is like yours to show what we make.
Could you log into YouTube as an annoyonous person and leave a comment as a response to those who have left you comments

  9. Agreed! Google plus totally goofed up my Picasa and it was very frustrating. I'm sorry for you problems but I'm delighted to see that you and so many other reasonable feel like I did. I thought I was the one one to delete that account!

  10. I so agree with you & other tatters who have posted above...
I have so far, successfully, repelled Google+ & hope to continue doing so.
I have deliberately not connected my Blogger account to my cell phone either. So, although this curtails my commenting & meaningfully interacting through the phone, it keeps some of my privacy intact.
Otherwise, for the "free" services & opportunities they offer (such as blogger, et al), I'm not complaining.

I'm sure your followers will continue to follow you -- your videos are an end to themselves -- immense learning resources! And you can always redirect them to your blog.

Wishing you peace & more success :-)

    1. That's exactly where the difficulty lies Muskaan: trying to keep some privacy. I love internet and the interaction it enables but that doesn't mean I want to share everything about my life. :-)

      Thank you for your message.

  11. I am afraid that in the future we will have less and less privacy because of social media on internet, gps and , ultimately hidden and flying camera's. I am not joking, i'm sad

  12. Do you know that: with blogspot Google provide you a free blog, but Google as the intellectual property of all the contents. Excessive, is not it?

    1. Lilas, that sounds scary! I hadn't realised that. I shall look into it.

    2. When I started blogging, I had asked a bunch of questions on Yahoo!Answers. And I was told to always save/back-up your blog. That way, even if something were to happen, you still had the right to upload it all again.
However, whether that could be done on any other site Besides Blogger, is what I wonder, if all IP belongs to Google

  13. I understand completely and share in the frustration. Hopefully there will be a resolution. I know you care a bunch about folks taking the time to share your craft.
You have so much knowledge about tatting and other crafts and are always willing to help. BTW I really enjoyed the Shuttle Review. Robin
    Best of luck, Robin

  14. very sad that approach is not about the end user but some sort of corporation dictating stuff ... it is encouraging that your view is shared and as we all know these days the power of social media can have a voice .... I am sure that if you were to start a petition etc. you would have a following ....
