Small Doily Completed

Tada!  Finished it last night.  I like the shape of the points.  It's a small doily which only just fits on the bed of my scanner so about 8.5 inches across.

I like the way he uses that curve of chains to get a lot of width in just one round.  This is a recurring theme in his patterns.

And can you see that gorgeous pair of pea pod earrings?
Aren't they sweet?
I just received them in the post a couple of days ago.
A lovely gift from a thoughtful friend.
I've been wearing them since.

Scan

I recently started scanning my tatting - don't know why I didn't think of it before...  especially useful when I complete things in the evening and I struggle to take good photos in artificial light.  But as I said, this doily was nearly too big to be scanned, you can see there is a little bit missing from the edges on the scanned image above.

What do you think?  Do you scan or take photos of your tatting?  Which works best for you?  I suppose the advantage of scanning is that it's so easy!  You don't have to worry about lighting or background or fuzziness... just place it on the glass, and press the button.  The advantage of photography is that you can vary the angle and the composition, add objects for a more interesting photo, take it outside, etc. so obviously, a lot more flexibility with the camera.

Now I must tear myself away from the tatting and go do some jobs!!

Best wishes,

  1. Oh my, that is a show piece doily! Wow!!

    I love the "arms".

I always take photos, good camera. The scanner is in a box, I do use it but it seems like more work than I want.

    1. I could do with some help on taking better photos then! Don't know if it's the camera or the photographer.... no doubt the latter! But I'm still a bit hit and miss with my photos: sometimes they come out great but often it's a struggle to get the right lighting and the photo I'm after.

  3. I realized that it was a Jan Stawasz's pattern after I posted my earlier comment.

  7. Wow, that's stunning! Really beautiful work. I use a camera more than a scanner, just because the scanner is more cumbersome. But it's the macro function on my camera that makes it good for taking these sort of photos.

  8. Amazing! I like the scanner when the tatting will fit, but that is probably because it is easier to get a "flat" look, and I usually do bookmarks.

  10. Beautiful tatting, Frivole. Just beautiful.

The earrings are such a delightful gift - perfect for you!

I finally used my scanner because of the way YOUR tatting looks, when you use the scanner!

I finally clued into why the stitches can have a quality when scanned that I can never capture with the Canon. Of course - no shadows and very flat, which is an ideal way to light tatting without distractions like background and so forth.

Now I utilize both methods depending on what mood I aim to achieve.

** third post finally got it right!

    1. I agree with you Fox. Just like the FS/BS vs traditional tatting, the scanner vs camera is not either or... it depends on what you want to achieve. Both work well, depending.

  11. I love your earrings - perfect!

This doily is pretty - I just got my JS book today, and recognized it right away as I was studying those "arms"!

I always take photos - I can try from different angles, etc. where the scanner is just one, flat shot. The scanner usually picks up details of really good work, however :)

  12. Lovely! I can hardly wait for my copy of the book to arrive. The earrings are adorable, and if I could wear earrings, I know I'd be looking for a pair for myself.

I prefer the scanner, but I'm too lazy to walk into the other room to use the scanner. Instead, I take poor photos.

  13. This is so beautiful! I admire your tidy and precise stitches...and the speed with which you work! Very impressive. And a lovely background for the pea pod earrings.

I just photograph since our scanner doesn't play nicely sending scans to the computer. But (assuming your scanner works)...you could lay a piece of colored paper on top and get some variety in color that way. Some of the plain scrapbook papers have really nicely saturated color.

    1. Nice idea about the paper on the scanner but as you'd have to put it on top of your tatting, it would end up undulating over the tatting I think and perhaps not looking so good.
