Jan Stawasz Doily

I always thought I would eventually like to tackle one of Jan Stawasz's doilies.  I really admire the perfect execution of his work.

So I started on this one:

I nearly stopped after two rounds as I felt there was two much contrast between the silver and the blue.  Then I did one more round to satisfy my curiosity.  I asked advice at In Tatters and I think many people agree there is too much contrast but others encouraged me to keep going...

So I tatted the fourth round and added another blue to the mix (it's the same family of blue as the dark one "Country Turquoise", but the light shade of it).

So that's where I'm at now.  Far enough that it seems a waste to throw it away... but still not convinced my choice of colours was wise.

Also not very happy with that second bit of dark blue, that row of rings is really hard to make perfect as there are three unattached rings between the ones that are attached to the previous row and they tend to move out of place.  I guess I need to pin it down and steam it to get the right shape.

On another note, I want to thank Diane for the lovely parcel she sent me when I won her giveaway:
Thanks Diane!

Best wishes,

  1. This looks amazing. I am so envious of those perfectly formed stitches you manage to tat! I cannot see the colour very well at the moment as it is too sunny here! Finally! I'll come back later...

I am still waiting to see what will eventuate with the work of the last post.

  2. Thank you Fox! Yes, I'm working on both (well three projects really) at the moment. I like variety so I always like to have a few things on the go at the same time so I can change and keep the interest up!

  5. I didn't see it before you added the lighter blue in this round, but I really like it just as it is. Color is a big design element. I think that is why I MUST change the colors when I repeat a pattern. It makes it seem fresh and new to me. I couldn't help noticing that the doily coordinates nicely with your blog background, too.

  6. Yes you're right Eliz, I hadn't noticed! I find myself always drawn to these sorts of grey-blues, greens, teals... I love that Country Turquoise by Lizbeth.

  10. I love the way your doily looks! The color choices are terrific, and although I thought I'd prefer the blue with cream, I now think the silver is a great choice. Your tatting is beautiful as always!
