Wipping!

No, not whipping!  But WIPping… as in completing WIPs (works-in-progress).  And I have more than one of those!  Here is a border I started aaaaages ago.  It has, in fact, sat completed for a considerable amount of time on my worktable.  I just needed to attach it to the hanky.  I did a little bit here and there but never settled to tackle the whole task in one go.  Still, I got to the end eventually… this morning!

The thread is a size 60 HDT by Jess of Tat-ilicious on Etsy.  It is called "Chilled Mess".  I struggled to find a matching handkerchief for the thread and finally decided to improvise a bit.  I had this one with a blue flower which could possibly work so I added some embroidered colours on the edge to pick up the colours of the HDT and bring the design together a bit more.

The edging pattern is "Pomegranate" by Ann Orr which I slightly modified and for which I designed a corner.  I just looked back and I'm embarrassed to say that I started this edging more than a year ago and the tatting was completed last February!  So there you go:  it took me about a year to attach it to a hanky.  Does that make you feel better about your own incomplete projects?  (Assuming you have any of course!).

A Handkerchief for Ann

Ever since I made this edging, I had wanted to make it in different colours (not as Christmas Trees).   Then one day, a while ago, Carolyn wrote to me to say she'd used the edging for a hanky with a leaf design and it looked so pretty!  You can see her hanky here on her blog and here on Craftsy - such a nice match between the shape of the edging and the leaves on the hanky and the colours - perfect, isn't it?

So when I was looking for an edging to make a handkerchief for a family member's special birthday, I thought I'd give it a try.  Here it is in pink:

I think white would have looked really good too...

but now I've got this far, I think I'll keep going with the pink, yes?

Attaching Tatting to Hanky

Maria sent me a message asking how I was attaching the lace in the previous post.  I took some photos for her and then I thought I might as well post them here too... should they be of interest to any others.

I use a hat pin to make the holes but any large, sharp needle would do.

Here is the hole I just made.  I like the holes right on the edge so there
won't be a long line of thread between the hole and the ring.

I'm using 5-5 rings to attach to the hanky.  So here are my first 5 stitches made.

Put your hook through the hole and pull a loop.

Loop pulled through, use it to make a normal join.

Here is the join made.  Complete the remaining stitches of your ring.

The joins are made with the underside facing so that the large rings
face the right side of the hanky (or you could use FSBS tatting of course).
So here it is, from the front.
Two sides done, two to go!
