Square Elegance

Guess what I received in the post yesterday?  From the wonderful Diane (Lace Lovin' Librarian)... yes, some doodads!  Lovely square doodads in fact.  But I decided "doodad" is not a very pretty word for these elegant and intricate little squares.

Thank you Diane!

Motif 25 of 25-motif challenge

So here is my first attempt at a pattern "with-doodad" (what else can we call them?)

Best wishes,

  2. I refer to them as 'components' - but that is just me

  3. Very beautiful...I think of them as ornamental centers or on yours perhaps centres d'ornement would be a nicer way of referring to the "doodads"

  5. Absolutely elegant!!! :)
    I would love that pattern!
I think the "doo-dads" should be called inspirational centers since you have all been inspired and designed some beautiful motifs with them!!! :)

  6. The websites I order from call them "embellishments" and list them as a sub-category under "components". I think "embellishment" is much nicer, but takes longer to type, so I usually just stick with "doodad".

I would love that pattern, too.

  7. Oh, I think doodad is much more elegant that what I usually call them: thingys, whatsits, gizmos. *sigh*

  10. Excellent design, as usual! I especially love it 'on point'!

These small 'components' (as they are listed by some companies) seem to be more easily found on the internet than in craft stores. Way back in March of 2011, Fox added that lovely round silver one to her 'Heart for Misha'. I don't know how she got the idea to do that, but it was perfect for that heart! Then around January 2012, Jane Eborall received several packages and different kinds of 'metal findings' from Irma in Chile (seems they have them in abundance there!). Then Jane started on her experiments, and I remember looking for them in craft stores here in the U.S., without great success. But Diane has a link to the six-sided ones, which are difficult to find but are perfect for snowflakes!

They are such a 'natural' as a design element in the centers of tatted items (especially snowflakes, pendants, and earrings, and even crosses and bookmarks!) Back in the '90s, I used to cover that hole by gluing (heaven forbid!) either a big gem or a silk flower in there (even on snowflakes!) Elizabeth Zipay since the 1990s has used larger metal filigree pieces to strengthen her tatted pins and pendants and to add some bling, so it's very exciting to see how tatting and filigree go so well together and that manufacturers are now making so many different kinds!

  11. I have always known them as 'medallions'. Wiki explains it well in the first sentence of its article = "A medal, or medallion, is strictly speaking a small, flat and round or oval, piece of metal that has been sculpted, molded, cast, struck, stamped, or some way marked with an insignia, portrait, or other artistic rendering." = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal. Looove Wiki, my go-to source.
Your body of work is so attractive, not only on your blog, but also on your etsy store. It just blows me away. So please, yes do write up patterns.

  15. That is so elegant! I got square doodads too, and I am quite paralysed by the idea of designing something myself... (maybe I should check the "rules" in Diane's double dare post, maybe I have to be brave...?)
Anyway, I *would* love to have this (so aptly named) elegant pattern!
