Rosalie

Here is my attempt at Rosalie (by Rachel Colvin Jackson) with its interlocking rings centre.  I have to say that I don't like it half as much as I like Rachel's.  Hers looks gorgeous! - mine looks ordinary.  The shape worked up differently (due to threads? shuttle instead of needle? Beads? My tension?).  I think the round seed beads looks better than delicas for this motif.

The first motif on the left is my first attempt but I found my beads were too large and crowding the design too much so I started again with different beads to complete the motif on the right.

Motif 15 of 25-motif challenge

Been practicing the interlocking rings some more... but I tell you, they have a life of their own!  I still can't consistently get it right but I'll keep practicing until I get there.

Meanwhile I will just admire Rachel's Rosalie because it's so much prettier!

Best wishes,

  1. I will agree that Rachael's works are stunning but your work here(and otherwise) is equally so, in my opinion! Your Rosalie on the right is gorgeous!

    1. Thank you very much Michelle! I wasn't fishing... I really meant that on this occasion, I feel my rendering of this particular pattern is definitely not as attractive as the original. I'm just being objective. But thank you!

  4. I agree that these are excellent! I can't believe you've come this far in only a few days (well, actually, I can - you are SO skilled in so many endeavors). I am quite envious because I still am wrestling with getting past the third ring! However, what this proves to me is that this CAN be done with the shuttle!

Am I correct that the loop made after tatting the ring and before closing is simply the 1st ds. It's sometimes difficult for me to understand the shuttle movements in reverse Riego. I've also found that using variegated thread helps me know what thread I am pulling!

Again, I am SO impressed that you're mastering this! And I thank both Rachel and Karen for sharing their expertise!

  6. I haven't seen Rachel's motif, but I think yours looks pretty stunning! There's another technique I will have to learn.

  7. I've tried some of Rachel's designs using shuttle instead of needle tatting and found I had to play with dk counts to get my finnished product to have the feel of hers. A shuttle tatted chain is thinner than a needle tatted chain for example, so the finished piece is much more open looking. Play with the pattern a bit until you are happy with your finished product.

    1. That's a very good point Beelizabeth. You are right that the needle-tatted piece looks "fuller" whereas mine looks more open and that gives it a completely different feel. I will try changing it a bit to see if I can get closer to the look of Rachel's.

  9. Your efforts look great, Frivole! Glad you like the pattern. Go ahead and tweak the stitch counts so they work better for you. I do that with my own work- some days I tat with more tension than others. Have you tried Ornela seed beads? They are more gently rounded than Delicas and lend themselves better to tatting IMHO. Happy Tatting!

    1. Thank you Rachel! I will look for different beads and then try to amend the stitch count a bit to see if I can get it looking a bit more like yours!
