As I'd said in the previous post, I needed to adjust - just a tiny bit! - the top part of Edda's heart for it to work with the way I tat. Adding just one stitch in those top chains did the trick for me. Otherwise it wasn't lying flat.

Here's the previous version where I forgot to add that one extra stitch on the rings on the right top curve and everything is all bunched up! I finished it anyway but it's for the bin!

This heart still remains one of my favourites, particularly if you want a quick project for a card, it's a fast make.
I tatted both these hearts FS\BS but for the dark one I used down joins (pulling the thread down through the picot) whereas in the paler version, I used up joins (pulling the thread up through the picot). If you have a moment to examine the two hearts, can you tell me if you think it makes enough of a difference to warrant the extra effort (granted it's not a very big extra effort!). I do find up joins are easier and quicker to make so tend to always (nearly always) use them. What do you think? Do you change your joins depending on which side of your tatting you are working on?
Also I still hope I have the correct definition for the joins...
Up Join: you go down through the picot with your hook and pull the thread UP through it
Down Join: you go up through the picot from behind and pull the thread DOWN through it
I think it's confusing because it depends if you're thinking about your hook going through the picot or the thread!
Anyway, that's how I've used the definition and how I've described it in this video so I hope you agree but if not, please tell me!
Best wishes,
Frivole

The second one, more open, does look better. As for the joins, I think the light version looks marginally better, but so marginally that I’d do what is easiest!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jane, I often think that too... yes, it's a tiny bit better with the down join from the front but I find it a bit fiddly to make and am not always in the mood for it! :-)
DeleteI think both hearts are pretty!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI do like this heart and have tatted many times, I do like the top one it sits better
ReplyDeleteI do like this heart and tatted it many times, i like you version at the top
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteAny chance you have this pattern written out or charted? Or could you confirm that after the trefoil, it's C 4-4, then R 3-3-4 (or 3-3-3?) The repeated rings appear to be 3-3-3-3? Then the chains in between are 3-3? And the SCMR has C3 before and after?Thank you!
Hello Michael, after the trefoil I made C5-4 (but the pattern is C4-4). All the stitch count in this pattern is 4 which makes it easier to remember. However, after the trefoil, the next two rings are 4-4-1-4-4 (that extra stitch and extra picot are crucial and easy to miss!) and the next two chains have two picots instead of one so are 4-4-4. The SCMR also has 4 stitches in the chains before it. I hope this helps!
DeletePerfect! That is what I needed to know. Thank you! I’m going to chart it and give it a try.
DeleteActually, I do have another question: the 2 rings after the trefoil , the 4-4-1-4-4, those two central picots connect to the previous and next rings?
DeleteSuccess! I was able to make the heart following your instructions, and it came out quite nicely. Thank you!
DeleteVery glad to hear it Michael! :-)
DeleteYour definitions are correct. Follow the up join with a 1st half stitch in backside element and follow the down join with a 2nd half stitch in a frontside element and the effect is of a complete double stitch, turning it into an invisible join.
ReplyDeleteThank you Muskaan! I always think the "Up\Down" definition can lead to confusion! :-)
DeleteIt looks like the darker heart has 4 rings joined together on the right side, but only 3 on the left, creating that more bunched look... but it could just be me.
ReplyDeleteAs for the joins, I've never noticed a difference between up & down, but I also don't tat FS/BS. Beautiful work as always!!
Hi Angie, yes, you are correct, the rings are more bunched on the right side because I forgot that pesky extra stitch and picot on two of the rings. They are easily missed! Thank you for your message! :-)
DeleteSeeing your descriptions, Ican say that, other than a folded join, I have never in my life made a down join. I've been thinking I should look into them more, especially for FS/BS.
ReplyDeleteIf you like tatting FS/BS then a down join completes that style of tatting well I think but you know it's each up to their own preference, tatting should be a joy and a pleasure so I always say go with what you prefer and what you enjoy doing. :-)
