Alba - New Snowflake 2024

Yes. I think I'm stopping here for this one.  I'm going to call it "Alba" which comes from the latin "Albus" and means white.

It unusually has no decorative picots but I think this brings it closer in look and shape to the original image of the real snowflake which inspired the design (see below).  It also just makes a change!

Real Snowflake photo by Wilson Bentley

For now I have put the other option I was working on to the side, firstly because I felt the first one was more interesting/original and - and this is the big one - I couldn't find a way to make it in one pass.  I also wasn't happy with the shape of the tips yet so it needed more work altogether.

Discarded Option

Below I'm showing a small photo of Alba and the snowflake photo side by side
because I think when viewed small, or from a distance, or with squinting your eyes,
you better see the similarities or differences in shape.

So it's not as close as some of my other designs
but I still feel the snowflakes, real and lace, share some resemblance.
I hope you think so too?

Regardless, the snowflake photo provided me with inspiration
and a good starting point for this new design.

I hope you like it!

Now on to writing the pattern!  And if anyone reading this likes the look of this one and fancies trying it for me, I always appreciate assistance in this department.  I plan on getting the pattern done during the course of this week. This pattern makes use of my 1SSCMR to make the points on the chains, a technique for which I have made a video which can be viewed here should you be interested.  It also uses one split ring for moving from round 1 to round 2.

Best wishes,
Frivole

  6. I'd love to help, though I'm not sure about the SSCMR (never done a single shuttle, just a regular SCMR). What a clever little snowflake! I am so amazed by designers like you... I could look at a snowflake for a million years and still not know how to turn it into a tatted project. Looking forward to the pattern coming out.

    1. Hi Angie, thank you for your comment! I should have spelled it out but it's not a single shuttle mock ring but a one-stitch-self-closing-mock-ring! So a 1SSCMR! A bit of a mouthful isn't it! I came up with the technique to be able to have pointy chains which are really useful when trying to re-create snowflakes.

    2. Ugh... I literally knew that! It needs another "s" to be single shuttle. When I read "pointy" I was like "someone has a video on that" not remembering that it was YOU! I'm so sorry. See you're even more talented than my memory can recall! Can't wait to try this 1 out. 😁

  7. Your snowflake is lovely as always! I was just looking at my Snowflake Bentley book recently and thinking of all the wonderful possibilities. I love that you use photos of snowflakes for your inspiration. If you need a test tatter, I would be happy to give it a try.

  11. Your snowflakes are amazing. I'm going out on a limb and like always I'm not in line I like the snowflake you have labeled as "discarded" . I'm sure it's not the "look" you were designing for, but it is lovely in it own design. I hope when time permits it will find it's way to a pattern. Thank you for your lovely designs and amazing talent you share with everyone except those ugly spammers

    1. Hi Cassandra, thank you for your comment. I'm adding a version of it to the pattern, it doesn't have the same inside curve but does have different tips.
