Another Big Project?

Debating whether to tackle another big piece...  This is a sample to try it out.  It's by Jan Stawasz.  This is tatted in size 10 as Jan seems to have tatted most of his pieces in that size.  I'm still not sure I enjoy working with size 10 though...  and it's one instance where my beloved Aeros are not perfect because you need to refill so often when using size 10 as the Aero bobbin doesn't hold enough thread in that size.

I wouldn't use that dark colour anyway.  I might go for ecru again for a large piece.  The chains feel a tad short to me but I don't know how it would affect the overall design if I added an extra two stitches to the chains...

Anyway, still at the pondering stage...

Best wishes,
Frivole

  1. Just lovely, I find it hard on my hands to work larger threads too.

    1. Hi Madtatter, I'm curious when you say it's harder on your hands... how so? It's an interesting discussion to have on which and why people prefer specific threads. :-)

  2. So pretty. I never tire of looking at your perfect stitches.

I am tatting with #20 and #40 at the moment and just when I had the splits in my fingertips all healed, these threads have made a bloody - literally- mess of my poor digits. I run screaming at the thought of using #10!

    1. Oh no! That sounds awful! It's strange as I'd imagine finer threads would be more likely to cut into your skin than thicker ones... nothing that awful happens to me with thicker threads, I just find I can't get as nice a rhythm working with size 10 as I do with finer ones.

  3. The chains seem like they are slightly short but it seems to lie well. Gorgeous color even it it's not ecru.

    1. Yes, and you can maybe see that the chains on the right are a bit shorter and then I tried to just pull a bit less tightly on subsequent ones but it still feels like it's a bit of a struggle for the chains to fit around the rings.

    1. I have to agree with you there Johanna, I also find that my stitches are more even with size 20 or smaller. I think that's what I mean about rhythm when I tat... in size 10 the forming of the stitches seems less natural and instinctive, I have to keep checking more to be sure it all looks uniform.

  8. I find no 10 too thick, your try sample looks lovely to me, great colour but like you I don't think a mat would look dainty in that colour,

  9. I only just learned what tatting is and was lucky enough to stumble on your blog! When you say "Aero [shuttles]", does that refer to/include Aerlits as sold by Handy Hands?
