Floral Edging… and Shoes!

I've tatted a few of Robin Perfetti's designs already - she can be found here - this time it's a floral edging (pattern in her pattern section).

This edging also comes with a corner.

It would definitely make a very pretty hanky.
And Robin also provides a bookmark version.

My two versions above have not been blocked.
They were just little samplers to try the pattern.

On a completely different subject, I thought I'd share with you my latest craft adventure.  If you've been following me for a while, you will know how much I like blues, in particular turquoise and teal.  I was lacking a pair of turquoise shoes for my wardrobe.  As you can imagine, they are not that easy to come by.  So I thought I'd give shoe dyeing a try.

I chose a pair of old shoes which I didn't mind messing up if it didn't work.

After one coat...

After three coats!

The finish is a little too shiny for my liking
and the shade of blue is not quite what I was after
but it's a process I can now repeat.
I decided I will buy a couple more dye colours
and mix them until I get the shade I'm looking for!

I like recycling.

Best wishes,
Frivole

  4. I've never heard of shoe dying before. I thought if the store didn't have the right color you were just out of luck!

I found the floral motif in a lot of my tatting books, but for the life of me could not find the bookmark pattern I was looking for. So, to the drawing board to make my own. I hope it is okay that I attached my name to such a simple idea, copyright can be so confusing!

  5. Lovely edging, I found the pattern from a link on someone's else's blog and willbe trying the patterns soon.
When I had my florist shop we used to do a lot of dyeing either ribbon, silk flowers and real ones, you did a good job with your shoes, there are times when you just can't get the right colour even if you can get the right shape shoes.

  6. I thought the same about Robin's pattern- even grabbed the MK book to look at that pattern. Downloaded robin's pattern as a hankie edging also. Great minds, eh?

The shoes? Super idea! Now tat something on the band! ; ))

  7. You did a great job on your shoes! Is the dye special for shoes?

The square motif reminds me of a pattern in a book by Jutta Lammèr from 1976. But what does that mean?

  9. I didn't know about this site for patterns! - thank you for drawing the hanky edging to my attention.
Dyeing shoes was something we did a lot of in the 60's - I remember matching shoes to all my outfits. I think it may have been easier to do that back then because shoes were still mostly leather, unlike today. When I suggested buying dye to match the bridesmaids shoes at my daughter's wedding recently, they looked at me as if I had come from another planet!! - or a long time ago....

  10. Robin's edging is on my to-do list. It reminds me of Mary Konior's designs, and MK is one of my favorite designers.

I'm not likely to take up shoe dyeing, but it's good to know it can be done!
